He hails from Nassau County, New York, and is an alumnus of Brown University, graduating in 1969, where he was involved in various student productions. Later, he pursued a Master of Fine Arts in theatre at Temple University.

Ciccolella has an impressive filmography that includes notable roles in acclaimed films such as *The Shawshank Redemption* (Mert), *Boys on the Side* (Jerry), and *Star Trek Nemesis* (Romulan Commander Suran). He also appeared in *The Terminal* as Karl Iverson and had roles in the remakes of *The Manchurian Candidate* and *Daredevil*.
