Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman (February 21, 1946 – January 14, 2016) was a distinguished English actor and director, celebrated for his distinctive, rich voice. He honed his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and became part of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), showcasing his talent in both classical and contemporary theatre. Notably, he portrayed the Vicomte de Valmont in the RSC's 1985 production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which later transitioned to the West End in 1986 and Broadway in 1987, earning him a Tony Award nomination.

Rickman's cinematic debut occurred with his role as Hans Gruber, the German terrorist leader, in the action film Die Hard (1988). He further captivated audiences as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), a performance that garnered him a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. His extensive filmography includes roles such as Elliott Marston in Quigley Down Under (1990), Colonel Brandon in Sense and Sensibility (1995), and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series (2001–2011), among others.

His television career kicked off with Tybalt in the BBC's Romeo and Juliet (1978), with a significant breakthrough in The Barchester Chronicles (1982). Rickman earned accolades for his portrayal of Rasputin in the 1996 film, winning a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He passed away from pancreatic cancer on January 14, 2016, at the age of 69, leaving behind an enduring legacy.
