Ralph Meeker
Ralph Meeker, originally named Ralph Rathgeber, was an eminent American actor born on November 21, 1920, and he passed away on August 5, 1988. Meeker first garnered attention on Broadway, making a significant impact with his performances in productions such as Mister Roberts (1948–1951), for which he received a Theatre World Award, and Picnic (1953).
His cinematic career took off with a memorable role as Mike Hammer in Robert Aldrich’s film Kiss Me Deadly (1955), which remains one of his most recognized performances. Meeker's rugged and masculine on-screen presence led him to a variety of notable roles. He starred in Stanley Kubrick's military courtroom drama Paths of Glory (1957), played a tormented mechanic alongside Carroll Baker in Something Wild (1961), and portrayed a World War II captain in the ensemble film The Dirty Dozen (1967), as well as appearing in the gangster flick The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967). His filmography also includes supporting roles in I Walk the Line (1970) and Sidney Lumet's The Anderson Tapes (1971).
In addition to his film work, Meeker enjoyed a fruitful television career, notably playing Sergeant Steve Dekker on the series Not for Hire (1959–1960) and featuring in the horror TV film The Night Stalker (1972). After suffering a stroke in 1980, he retired from acting and sadly passed away from a heart attack in Los Angeles eight years later.
