Swatilekha Sengupta
Swatilekha Sengupta (née Chatterjee; 22 May 1950 – 16 June 2021) was a renowned Bengali actress celebrated for her significant contributions to Indian theatre and cinema. Her remarkable talent earned her the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, recognizing her influence in the performing arts.
Sengupta's artistic journey began in Allahabad during the early 1970s, where she honed her craft in theater, participating in various productions directed by A.C. Banerjee. Throughout her formative years, she benefitted from the mentorship of notable figures such as B.V. Karanth, Tapas Sen, and Khaled Chowdhury. In 1978, she relocated to Kolkata and joined the esteemed theater group Nandikar, where she collaborated closely with director Rudraprasad Sengupta, who later became her husband.
In addition to her stage work, Swatilekha made a mark in the film industry, most notably starring as the female lead in Satyajit Ray's acclaimed 1985 adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's novel, "Ghare Baire," alongside actors Victor Banerjee and Soumitra Chatterjee. Her filmography also includes noteworthy performances in "Chauranga," "Bela Seshe," "Dharmajuddha," and "Bela Shuru," further showcasing her versatility and depth as an actress.
