James Avery
James LaRue Avery (November 27, 1945 – December 31, 2013) was a distinguished American actor celebrated for his dynamic presence on screen. He gained widespread recognition for his iconic role as Philip Banks, the wise and authoritative uncle to Will Smith's character in the beloved sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Avery's portrayal of this father figure earned him a spot at #34 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time," solidifying his impact in television history.
Beyond his live-action roles, Avery showcased his vocal talents by voicing several memorable characters in animated series.
