John St. Polis
John M. St. Polis (November 24, 1873 – October 8, 1946) was a prominent American actor whose career spanned several decades, with significant contributions to both stage and film. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, St. Polis initially gained recognition on Broadway, particularly for his portrayal of Frederik in the original production of *The Return of Peter Grimm*, which premiered in 1911 and saw a revival in 1921 at the Belasco Theatre.
Throughout his extensive film career, which lasted from 1914 to 1943, St. Polis featured in 126 films. In the early years of his career, he was credited as John Sainpolis. Among his most notable roles, he is remembered for his performance as Etienne Laurier in the iconic silent film *The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse* (1921) and as Comte Phillipe de Chagny in the 1925 adaptation of *The Phantom of the Opera*.
St. Polis adeptly transitioned from silent films to the era of "talkies," with one of his standout performances being that of Dr. John M. Besant in *Coquette* (1929), where he appeared alongside the legendary Mary Pickford. His diverse talents and enduring legacy have left a lasting impact on the American entertainment industry.
