Basil Hoffman

Basil Harry Hoffman (January 18, 1938 — September 17, 2021) was a distinguished American actor whose extensive career spanned over fifty years, primarily featuring him in supporting roles across film and television. He collaborated with acclaimed directors such as Alan Pakula and Robert Redford, contributing to a rich tapestry of cinematic history.

Born in Houston, Texas, he was the son of Beulah and David Hoffman, an antique dealer. After earning his degree from Tulane University, Hoffman honed his craft at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he received a scholarship for his second year.

His early career in New York encompassed numerous theatrical performances, guest appearances in episodic television, and a notable role in the film *Lady Liberty*, directed by Mario Monicelli. He made his debut in Los Angeles in 1974 with Peter Bogdanovich's *At Long Last Love*. Over the following years, Hoffman became a familiar face on television, appearing in series like *M*A*S*H*, *Columbo*, and *The Rockford Files*, and had recurring roles in *Ellery Queen* and *Square Pegs*.

In addition to his screen work, Hoffman was a celebrated stage actor, earning a Drama-Logue Award for his performance in *Sand Mountain*. His film credits include *All the President's Men*, *Close Encounters of the Third Kind*, and the Academy Award-winning *Ordinary People* and *The Artist*.

A dedicated acting coach, Hoffman shared his expertise as a guest lecturer at esteemed institutions such as the American Film Institute and the University of Southern California. In 2008, he served as a Cultural Envoy for the U.S. State Department, teaching acting in Lebanon. Throughout his life, Hoffman remained a passionate advocate for the arts and education.
