David Clarke
David Gainey Clarke (August 30, 1908 – April 18, 2004) was a prominent American actor celebrated for his work on both Broadway and in film. Hailing from Chicago and an alumnus of Butler University, Clarke launched his acting career in the vibrant theater scene of the 1930s. His cinematic debut came with the film *Knockout* in 1941, but he gained significant recognition for his compelling performances in film noir during the 1940s and 1950s, where he often portrayed memorable character roles.
Clarke's theatrical talents shone brightly on the West Coast at the Biltmore Theatre in Los Angeles, and he made notable contributions to Broadway with original performances in classics such as *A View from the Bridge*, *Orpheus Descending*, *The Ballad of the Sad Cafe*, *Inquest*, and *The Visit*. In the realm of television, he is remembered for his role as Abel Bingley on *The Waltons* and as Tiso Novotny in the soap opera *Ryan's Hope*.
After spending several years in Belmont, Ohio, Clarke relocated to Arlington, Virginia, to be closer to his daughters. He passed away due to pneumonia in 2004 at the age of 95. Clarke was married to Nora Dunfee, and the couple had two daughters together.
