In 1940s Mississippi, Lucas Beauchamp, a proud black man, is accused of murdering a white man after being found at the crime scene with a smoking gun. Despite his claims of innocence, the town’s top attorney, Gavin Stevens, initially declines to represent him. However, a young boy who Lucas once aided, convinced of his innocence, urges Stevens to take on the case. As whispers of a lynch mob grow louder, the stakes rise, prompting Stevens to confront the townspeople’s prejudices and seek justice for Beauchamp.
