Will Geer (March 9, 1902 – April 22, 1978) was a prominent American actor and passionate social activist, originally named William Aughe Ghere. He is best remembered for his role as Grandpa Zebulon Tyler Walton in the beloved 1970s television series, The Waltons.

Geer made his mark on Broadway in 1928, debuting as Pistol in Much Ado About Nothing. He also originated the character of Mr. Mister in Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock and portrayed Candy in John Steinbeck's stage adaptation of Of Mice and Men. Throughout the 1940s, he showcased his talent in various plays and revues. Between 1948 and 1951, Geer appeared in over a dozen films, including notable titles such as Winchester '73, Broken Arrow, and Bright Victory.

A committed member of the Communist Party since 1934, Geer played a significant role in labor activism, notably supporting the West Coast waterfront strike that year alongside fellow activist Harry Hay. He became a prominent figure in the folk music scene, collaborating with artists like Burl Ives and Woody Guthrie. In 1956, he and Guthrie released an album titled Bound for Glory: Songs and Stories of Woody Guthrie.

Geer faced challenges in the 1950s after being blacklisted for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Despite this setback, he continued to act, appearing in the pro-union film Salt of the Earth (1954), which faced severe scrutiny and difficulties due to its themes.
