Despite facing opposition from his family—his father was a banker and his mother worked in the lumber industry—he pursued a career in acting. Smith attended Hollywood High School, where he began to hone his craft. In his teenage years, he made a memorable appearance as Robin Hood at the Hollywood Bowl, catching the eye of prominent actress Lenore Ulric, who provided him with his breakthrough role in the play 'Kiki.'
Following this initial success, Smith spent six years performing in stock theater, developing his skills and stage presence. He eventually returned to the West Coast, where he starred in the production of "The Royal Family," further establishing his reputation in the theatrical community. His striking looks—standing 5 feet 11 inches tall, with blonde hair and blue eyes—captured the attention of Pathe Studios, leading to a lucrative contract.
