Blue Washington
Blue Washington, originally named Edgar Hughes Washington, was born on February 12, 1898, in Los Angeles, California. He was a versatile talent, making his mark as both an actor and a professional baseball player. Washington's screen credits include notable films such as *There It Is* (1928), *Beggars of Life* (1928), and *Haunted Gold* (1932), where he played the role of John Wayne's sidekick. His contributions to the film industry occurred during a time when Hollywood was slowly beginning to acknowledge African American talent.
In addition to his acting career, Washington was a significant figure in the Negro Leagues, playing for teams such as the Los Angeles White Sox and briefly with the Kansas City Monarchs during the 1910s and 1920s. His athletic prowess and charisma earned him respect both on and off the field.
Washington had a close friendship with acclaimed director Frank Capra, who affectionately called him "Blue," a nickname that would stick throughout his life. He was married to Marion Lenán, and upon his passing on September 15, 1970, at Mira Loma Hospital in Lancaster, California, he was buried at Evergreen Memorial Park in Los Angeles. His legacy continues through his son, Kenny Washington, who was laid to rest beside him in 1971.
