Barry Humphries
John Barry Humphries, AO, CBE (17 February 1934 - 22 April 2023) was a celebrated Australian comedian, satirist, artist, author, and character actor, renowned for his iconic personas, particularly Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. Dame Edna, a flamboyant Melbourne housewife, transformed from a mundane suburban figure into a global sensation epitomizing the absurdities of fame over four decades. Her sharp wit and extravagant outfits captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.
Humphries' career spanned various mediums, including film, television, and theatre, where he left an indelible mark on London's West End. His work was characterized by a unique blend of dadaist and absurdist humor, leading biographer Anne Pender to declare him the most significant theatrical figure since Charlie Chaplin.
Another notable creation, Barry McKenzie, emerged from a comic strip in Private Eye, humorously depicting Australian life in London and contributing to the popularization of Australian slang. This character later starred in two films, with Barry Crocker portraying him.
In addition to these iconic figures, Humphries introduced a plethora of other memorable characters, such as the inebriated Sir Les Patterson, the gentle Sandy Stone, and the underground filmmaker Martin Agrippa. His contributions to the arts and comedy earned him widespread acclaim and recognition.
Humphries passed away on 22 April 2023, following complications from hip surgery at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and cultural critique.
