John Boles (October 28, 1895 – February 27, 1969) was a prominent American singer and actor, celebrated for his role as Victor Moritz in the iconic 1931 film Frankenstein. Initially making his mark in Hollywood during the silent film era, Boles found incredible success with the rise of sound films. After serving in the military, he relocated to New York to pursue music studies and soon gained recognition on Broadway. His big break came when he was cast as the leading man in the 1923 musical Little Jesse James, which marked the beginning of his illustrious stage career.

Boles' Broadway repertoire includes notable productions like One Touch of Venus (1943), Kitty's Kisses (1925), and Mercenary Mary (1924). In 1924, he was signed by MGM for a silent film but returned to Broadway after completing two films with the studio. His return to Hollywood in 1927 for The Love of Sunya alongside Gloria Swanson was a significant hit, although it was not until late in the decade that he showcased his singing talents.

In 1929, he starred in Warner Brothers’ musical operetta The Desert Song, which became a box-office sensation. His popularity soared, leading to his role in RKO's lavish production of Rio Rita, where his vocal prowess captivated audiences. Following this success, he continued to work with Warner Brothers on projects like Song of the West (1930) and starred in the all-Technicolor musical The King of Jazz (1930). Boles' filmography includes significant roles in One Heavenly Night (1931), The Age of Innocence (1934), and Stella Dallas (1937), solidifying his legacy as a versatile performer in both musical and dramatic roles.
