Jean Hagen, originally named Jean Shirley Verhagen, was an American actress celebrated for her remarkable talent and memorable performances. Born on August 3, 1923, she gained widespread acclaim for her role as the self-absorbed silent film star Lina Lamont in the iconic musical "Singin' in the Rain" (1952). This performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Hagen's television career was equally impressive; she garnered three Emmy nominations for her portrayal of Margaret Williams on the sitcom "Make Room for Daddy," which aired from 1953 to 1956.

Hagen's film career began with a comedic role in the classic "Adam's Rib" (1949), featuring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. She secured her first leading role in "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950) and continued to impress audiences with performances in film noir, including "Side Street" (1950). Her role as Lina Lamont remains iconic, showcasing her unique ability to blend comedy with drama.

After leaving "Make Room for Daddy," Hagen's character was famously killed off, marking a significant moment in television history. She continued to make guest appearances in popular series, including "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "The DuPont Show," and "The Andy Griffith Show." Despite facing health challenges in the 1960s, Hagen managed a comeback in the mid-1970s with roles in "Starsky and Hutch" and "The Streets of San Francisco." Sadly, her last performance was in the TV movie "Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn" in 1977, shortly before her passing on August 29 of that year.
