Lionel Belmore
Lionel Belmore, born on May 12, 1867, in Wimbledon, Surrey, England, was an accomplished English character actor and director whose career spanned over 25 years. He made his mark on the stage, sharing the spotlight with luminaries such as Wilson Barrett, Sir Henry Irving, William Faversham, and Lily Langtry. Belmore transitioned to film in 1911, amassing an impressive filmography that includes around 200 titles.
One of his most memorable performances was as the irritable Herr Vogel, the Burgomaster, in the iconic horror film *Frankenstein* (1931). Throughout the 1930s, he contributed to several classic films, often in supporting roles that showcased his talent for embodying unique characters. Interestingly, Belmore began his career as a director, helming productions from 1914 until 1920 before dedicating himself entirely to acting.
Belmore hailed from a family of performing artists; he was the brother of actress Daisy Belmore and actor Paul Belmore. He was married to stage actress Emmeline Florence Carder, and together they raised two daughters, one of whom, Violet, chose to pursue a career in acting, following in her father's significant legacy. Lionel Belmore passed away on January 30, 1953, in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of theatre and film.
