Phillips Raymond Holmes (July 22, 1907 – August 12, 1942) was an American actor known for his notable performances in the early days of Hollywood. He first caught the eye of filmmakers in 1928 while attending Princeton University, where he was chosen for a screen test during the production of Frank Tuttle's *Varsity*. By the early 1930s, Holmes had established himself as a leading man, with a standout role in Josef von Sternberg's acclaimed film *An American Tragedy*.

Throughout his career, Holmes worked primarily with Paramount Pictures, where he showcased his talents in both melodramas and comedies. However, after his contract with Paramount ended in 1933, he transitioned to MGM for a brief period. As the 1930s progressed, his career faced challenges, marked by a series of box-office disappointments, including the poorly received *Nana* (1934). His final American film was *General Spanky* (1936). Following a stint in the UK, where he appeared in two films, he returned to stage acting in the U.S.

With the onset of World War II, Holmes enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, tragically losing his life in a mid-air collision in Ontario in 1942. In recognition of his contributions to cinema, he was posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
