David Paul Scofield CH CBE (21 January 1922 – 19 March 2008) was a distinguished English actor whose remarkable career spanned over seventy years. Renowned for his exceptional talent, Scofield achieved the prestigious Triple Crown of Acting, securing an Academy Award, an Emmy, and a Tony within a brief seven-year period, making him the fastest performer to do so.

Scofield's portrayal of Sir Thomas More in the Broadway production of A Man for All Seasons earned him the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play in 1962. He later reprised this iconic role in the acclaimed 1966 film adaptation, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor and joining the ranks of a select few who have received both a Tony and an Academy Award for the same performance. Additionally, he was honored with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his work in the 1969 television film Male of the Species.

While he favored the stage over film and prioritized his family life, Scofield built a legacy as one of the foremost Shakespearean actors of his time. His role as Mark Van Doren in the 1994 film Quiz Show earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, while his performance as Thomas Danforth in The Crucible (1996) garnered him a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Although he declined a knighthood, Scofield was appointed CBE in 1956 and became a Companion of Honour in 2001.
