Phyllis Diller
Phyllis Ada Diller (née Driver; July 17, 1917 – August 20, 2012) was a multifaceted American entertainer known for her pioneering work in stand-up comedy, as well as her roles as an actress, author, musician, and visual artist. She gained fame for her quirky stage persona, marked by self-mocking humor, flamboyant hairstyles and outfits, and a distinctive, cackling laugh.
As one of the first women in comedy to achieve widespread recognition in the United States, Diller has been acknowledged as a significant influence on later comedians such as Joan Rivers, Roseanne Barr, and Ellen DeGeneres. She also garnered a devoted following within the LGBTQ+ community and is celebrated as a gay icon. Additionally, Diller was among the first public figures to advocate for plastic surgery, earning accolades from the cosmetic surgery field for her openness about the subject.
Over her career, Diller made appearances in over 40 films, starting with the 1961 classic Splendor in the Grass. She showcased her talent on numerous television programs, including memorable guest spots and her own short-lived sitcom and variety show. Notable appearances include roles in Night Gallery, The Muppet Show, The Love Boat, Cybill, and Boston Legal, alongside an impressive 11-season run on The Bold and the Beautiful. Diller also lent her voice to animated characters, such as the monster's wife in Mad Monster Party, the Queen in A Bug's Life, Granny Neutron in The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and Thelma Griffin in Family Guy.
