Samuel Hui Koon-Kit (許冠傑), born on September 6, 1948, in Guangzhou, China, is a renowned Hong Kong musician, singer, songwriter, and actor. His family fled to Hong Kong in 1950, seeking refuge. Hui is widely recognized for his pivotal role in the Cantopop genre, effectively blending Western musical influences with traditional styles. His clever use of colloquial Cantonese in his lyrics has resonated with audiences, allowing him to uniquely address contemporary issues and social concerns. Often hailed as the first major superstar of Cantopop, he has earned the title "God of Song."
In addition to his music career, Hui is celebrated for his acting prowess, particularly for his iconic role as "King Kong" in the popular Aces Go Places film series, which spanned five installments.
