Born in Charmouth, he embarked on his acting journey after a brief stint at Cranleigh School in Surrey and eventually moved to the United States in 1922.

Bunston made his Broadway debut in 1923 with Arthur Wing Pinero's The Enchanted Cottage, followed by roles in short-lived productions such as That Awful Mrs. Eaton! and Simon Called Peter. However, it was his portrayal of Dr. John Seward in the 1927 Broadway production of Dracula, alongside the iconic Bela Lugosi, that solidified his place in theatrical history. Throughout his Broadway career, Bunston showcased his talent in notable productions including Young Woodley (1925), Simon Called Peter (1924), and Drink (1903). His stage accomplishments paved the way for a fruitful film career with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where he appeared in over 30 films from 1929 until his passing.

Married to Emily Fox Chaffey in 1898, Bunston was the father of two children, Margaret and John. He passed away from a heart attack on February 27, 1935, leaving behind a legacy of significant contributions to theater and cinema.
