John McEnery
John McEnery (1943-2019) was a notable British actor and writer whose career spanned several decades. He discovered his passion for acting at the young age of 20, marking the beginning of his professional journey with three seasons at the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. His formal training was completed at the esteemed Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, leading to his membership in the British National Theatre Company in 1966.
McEnery's film and stage career featured prominent roles, including a poignant performance alongside Claude Jade and Jean-Pierre Cassel in Gérard Brach's film, The Boat on the Grass. He is perhaps best remembered for his portrayal of Mercutio in Franco Zeffirelli's adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, a role that earned him a BAFTA nomination. His film credits also include a significant appearance in Nicholas and Alexandra. In 2008, he made a guest appearance in the first episode of Wallander, titled Sidetracked.
In 1998, he showcased his writing talent with the play Merry Christmas, Mr. Burbage, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Globe Theatre's establishment.
John McEnery leaves behind two daughters, Phoebe and Chloe, from his marriage to actress Stephanie Beacham. He also had two brothers, one of whom is actor Peter McEnery, while the other is photographer David McEnery.
