Marie-José Benhalassa, better known as Marie-José Nat, was a prominent French actress born on April 22, 1940, in Bonifacio, Corse-du-Sud. She was the daughter of a Kabyle Berber father, Abdelkader Benhalassa, and a Corsican mother, Vincentine Biancarelli. Nat's career began in modeling, where she gained attention as a cover-girl and haute-couture model, winning a 1955 contest from the magazine Femmes d'aujourd'hui.

Her acting debut came in 1959 with Denys de La Patellière's film Rue des prairies, where she starred alongside Jean Gabin. She quickly rose to fame with significant roles in films such as La Vérité (1960) and the acclaimed sequel films by André Cayatte, Anatomy of a Marriage: My Days with Jean-Marc and My Days with Françoise (1963). One of her most celebrated performances was in Violins at the Ball (1974), for which she won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Throughout her career, Nat collaborated with her then-husband Michel Drach on several films, including Amelie or The Time to Love (1961) and Les violons du bal (1974). Her filmography also features notable works like Train of Life (1998) and Litan (1982).

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Nat was awarded the prestigious Légion d'honneur and held various honors, including being named a commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She passed away on October 10, 2019, in Paris, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable performances and influence in French cinema.
