Mary Martin

Mary Virginia Martin (December 1, 1913 – November 3, 1990) was a distinguished American actress and singer, celebrated for her iconic contributions to Broadway. Recognized as a muse by the illustrious duo Rodgers and Hammerstein, she brought to life memorable roles, notably as Nellie Forbush in *South Pacific* and Maria von Trapp in *The Sound of Music*. Her remarkable career earned her the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in 1989, and she was the mother of the renowned actor Larry Hagman.

Martin's artistic journey commenced in radio in 1939, where she showcased her vocal talents on CBS's *The Tuesday Night Party*. She later transitioned to NBC, where she was featured in programs like *Good News of 1940* and *Kraft Music Hall*. Her Broadway debut took place in November 1938 with Cole Porter's *Leave It to Me!*, where her rendition of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" catapulted her to stardom.

Her Broadway triumphs continued with performances in *Peter Pan*, for which she won a Tony Award, and later in *Annie Get Your Gun*. Although she starred in several films from 1938 to 1943, she preferred the immediacy of live theater, often preserving her performances through television adaptations, including her celebrated portrayal of Peter Pan on NBC.

Throughout her illustrious career, Martin garnered numerous accolades, including a special Tony Award in 1948 and an Emmy Award in 1956. Inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1973, she remains an enduring symbol of theatrical excellence.
