Alan Leslie Freeman MBE, affectionately known as "Fluff," was a prominent Australian-born British disc jockey and radio personality whose career spanned four decades in the UK. Born on July 6, 1927, in Melbourne, Australia, Freeman initially pursued a career as an assistant paymaster for a major timber company after completing his education. With aspirations to become an opera singer, he quickly pivoted to radio when he auditioned and began his broadcasting career in 1952 at 7LA in Tasmania, where he served in various roles including DJ, newsreader, and quizmaster.

In 1957, Freeman ventured to the UK after a global trip and began his British radio journey as a summer relief DJ on Radio Luxembourg, later hosting late-night shows until the early 1970s. His breakout moment came in 1960 when he joined the BBC Light Programme, presenting the popular show Records Around Five, which featured his signature tune, "At the Sign of the Swingin' Cymbal." In 1961, he launched the iconic Pick of the Pops, which he hosted until 2000, solidifying his status as a beloved figure in British radio.

Freeman also made notable appearances in film and television, including roles in the horror film Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965) and the rock musical Absolute Beginners (1986).
