Blossom Seeley
Blossom Seeley stands out as one of the most remarkable vaudeville singers of her time, rivaling the talents of prominent figures like Nora Bayes and Sophie Tucker. Her career commenced in childhood as she performed at San Francisco's lively Barbary Coast, where her ragtime singing and vibrant stage presence, characterized by strutting and finger-snapping, quickly garnered attention. Blossom's unique style propelled her to New York, the epicenter of vaudeville and musical entertainment, where she showcased her talents both as a solo artist and alongside her husbands.
Among her notable partnerships were Joe Kane and Rube Marquard, the distinguished pitcher for the New York Giants. However, it was with Benny Fields that Blossom formed her most enduring relationship, both professionally and personally. Throughout her career, she ventured into film and radio while gracefully accepting the shifting tides of the entertainment industry as vaudeville waned.
Following the untimely passing of Benny Fields in 1959, Blossom attempted a revival of her career, making an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Although she maintained her vocal prowess well into her seventies and eighties and remained a captivating performer, the era that had celebrated her talent had largely passed, leaving her to reflect on a remarkable career that had significantly shaped the landscape of American entertainment.
