Chris Lowe
Christopher Sean Lowe, born on October 4, 1959, in Blackpool, Lancashire, is an acclaimed English musician, singer, and songwriter, best known as the co-founder of the iconic synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, alongside Neil Tennant, which they established in 1981.
Lowe's musical journey began early, influenced by a family steeped in the arts—his grandfather was a trombonist with The Nitwits, and his mother was a dancer. He honed his musical skills through trombone and piano, participating in the school orchestra and dance band, while also playing in a semi-professional dance band, One Under the Eight. After studying architecture at the University of Liverpool, where he earned his BA (Hons) in 1981, he briefly worked at an architectural firm. It was here that he crossed paths with Tennant, solidifying their partnership in music.
As the primary keyboardist for Pet Shop Boys, Lowe occasionally lends his voice, notably leading on tracks like "Paninaro." His versatility is showcased through his contributions to songs such as "I Want a Lover" and "What Have I Done to Deserve This?"
Beyond Pet Shop Boys, Lowe showcased his creativity by writing and producing "Do the Right Thing" for footballer Ian Wright in 1993 and composing music for the stage revival of Bent in 2006. He also made a memorable cameo on the Australian soap opera Neighbours in 1994, and in 2011, he stepped outside his usual role by providing vocals for Stop Modernists' cover of New Order's "Subculture." Throughout his career, Lowe has left an indelible mark on the music industry, both as a member of Pet Shop Boys and as a solo artist.
