Rodney Gilfry
Rodney Gilfry, born on March 11, 1959, in Covina, California, is a distinguished American operatic baritone celebrated for his powerful performances and compelling stage presence. He began his professional journey at the Frankfurt Opera in 1987, quickly garnering acclaim for his interpretations of classic roles. A master of Mozart, Gilfry has delivered notable portrayals of Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva, Guglielmo, and Papageno, and he has also excelled in the broader baritone repertoire, including roles such as Pelléas, Valentin, Orestes, Belcore, and Billy Budd.
Gilfry's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in music education from California State University, Fullerton, and a master's degree in voice from the Thornton School of Music at USC. He honed his craft under the guidance of celebrated instructors like Martial Singher and Armen Boyajian.
His operatic debut occurred at the Los Angeles Opera in 1986, and after several successful years in Europe, he made a significant return to the U.S. He debuted with the Metropolitan Opera on November 25, 1996, as Demetrius in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream and later took on roles in Puccini's La bohème and Mozart's Così fan tutte.
