Bill Owen
Bill Owen, born William Rowbotham, was a celebrated British actor renowned for his portrayals of working-class characters in film and television. He was born into humble beginnings, the son of a tram driver and a laundress. To fund his passion for acting, Owen initially showcased his musical talent as a drummer in London nightclubs and toured music halls with his own cabaret act. His early career included entertaining guests at Butlin's holiday camps and performing in repertory theatre, where he gained recognition as a capable stage producer at the Unity Theatre.
His burgeoning career faced a setback when he served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, where he was injured during a training exercise. After his recovery, Owen began to make a name for himself in films such as "Johnny in the Clouds" (1945), "When the Bough Breaks" (1947), "Maniacs on Wheels" (1949), and "The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men" (1952). He reached new heights in theatre, sharing the stage with legendary actress Katharine Hepburn in "As You Like It" (1950) and showcasing his musical abilities in productions like "The Threepenny Opera" and "The Mikado." As a writer, he collaborated with Mike Sammes to create songs for artists including Pat Boone and Sir Cliff Richard, whose 1980 hit "Marianne" was penned by Owen.
Owen achieved television fame as Compo in the BBC’s beloved series "Last of the Summer Wine," which premiered in 1973. Upon his passing from pancreatic cancer in 1999, he requested to be laid to rest in Holmfirth, the picturesque Yorkshire village where the series was filmed. In recognition of his contributions to the arts and community, Owen was awarded the MBE in 1976 for his dedication to the National Association of Boys Clubs and his leadership of the Performing Arts Advising Panel.
