He embarked on his artistic journey in the entertainment industry through music videos, making his film debut in 1990 with Sandra Bernhard's *Without You I’m Nothing*. Hounsou gained international acclaim for his powerful portrayal of Cinqué in Steven Spielberg's *Amistad* (1997), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Hounsou's early life saw him move to Lyon, France, at the age of thirteen, alongside his brother, Edmond. He transitioned to modeling in 1987, establishing himself in Paris before relocating to the United States in 1990. Although he pursued higher education, he left college to fully dedicate himself to acting.

His extensive filmography includes notable roles in *Gladiator* (2000) as Juba and *In America* (2002), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, becoming the fourth African male nominated for the prestigious award.
