He gained widespread recognition for his performances in notable films such as Quest for Fire (1981), Dune (1984), Silver Bullet (1985), Heartbreak Ridge (1986), Licence to Kill (1989), The People Under the Stairs (1991), and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995). Additionally, he is celebrated for his portrayal of "Big" Ed Hurley in the iconic television series Twin Peaks, which aired from 1990 to 1991.

McGill's journey in the performing arts began on Broadway, where he showcased his talent in acclaimed productions like Equus, A Texas Trilogy, and Whose Life Is It, Anyway?
