David Lyon
David Laurie Lyon (16 May 1941 – 7 June 2013) was a distinguished British actor known for his extensive work in theatre, television, and film. Born to diamond merchant Joe Lyon and his wife Margaret in 1941, David spent part of his childhood in Sierra Leone before returning to Scotland for his education. After attending Crofton House in Dumfriesshire, he earned a scholarship to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh but had to leave at age 16 due to his father's bankruptcy.
Initially, Lyon embarked on a career in the insurance industry and later became a flooring salesman in Birmingham. However, at 30, he made a pivotal decision to pursue acting, enrolling as a mature student at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His professional acting journey began in earnest in 1975 at the Manchester Library Theatre, leading to a prolific two-decade association with the Royal Shakespeare Company. There, he showcased his talents in classics like *Much Ado About Nothing*, *Henry V*, and *Romeo and Juliet*, as well as in modern works such as *The Innocent*.
In addition to his stage career, Lyon made a significant impact on television from the 1980s onwards. He was notably cast as Prime Minister Henry Collingridge in the original BBC series *House of Cards* (1990) and appeared in various popular shows including *The Bill*, *Midsomer Murders*, and *Silent Witness*.
Lyon shared a long-term relationship with fellow RSC actor Zoë Wanamaker and later married Sandra Clark in 1989, whom he had reconnected with during a performance of *Romeo and Juliet*. He embraced family life, gaining two step-children through this union.
