She initially gained fame for her dual roles as Vicky Hudson and Marley Love on the soap opera *Another World* (1987–1991), a performance that earned her a Daytime Emmy Award along with two Soap Opera Digest Awards.

In the late 1990s, Heche solidified her status as a prominent actress with a series of notable performances in films such as the crime drama *Donnie Brasco* (1997), the disaster thriller *Volcano* (1997), the slasher hit *I Know What You Did Last Summer* (1997), and the political satire *Wag the Dog* (1997).
