Matt Lattanzi, born in Portland, Oregon, is the son of Jeanette (née Slowikowski) and Charles Paul Lattanzi. His father, of Italian heritage, worked as a maintenance foreman, while his mother hailed from Polish roots. Lattanzi completed his education at Benson Polytechnic High School in 1977 before embarking on a career in acting. His notable breakthrough came with the 1980 film "Xanadu," where he crossed paths with Olivia Newton-John; the two married in 1984 and welcomed their daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi, on January 17, 1986.

By the early 1990s, Lattanzi's acting endeavors diminished, leading him to a construction job with a home-building firm in California. In 1993, he and Newton-John relocated to their ranch in Australia so that he could pursue an audition for the soap opera "Paradise Beach," which secured him a six-month contract. However, the couple's relationship faced turmoil, resulting in their separation later that year and eventual divorce in 1995 after Lattanzi's infidelity. He later wed Cindy Jessup, but their marriage concluded in early 2007.

In 2008, Lattanzi made a brief appearance on the MTV reality series "Rock the Cradle," where he supported Chloe during her time as a contestant. An avid environmentalist, he has been reported to live off the grid near Malibu, California, reflecting his commitment to sustainable living.
