Evans made his film debut in 1947 and quickly became a familiar face in Hollywood, known for roles as tough cowboys, sheriffs, convicts, and sergeants. Notably, he collaborated extensively with director Samuel Fuller in films such as "The Steel Helmet," where Fuller famously chose Evans over John Wayne after witnessing his genuine soldierly demeanor. This partnership continued with features like "Fixed Bayonets!" and "Shock Corridor," showcasing Evans's versatility and dedication to his roles.

In television, Evans is perhaps best remembered for his role as the stern yet caring father, Rob McLaughlin, in the 1956-1957 series "My Friend Flicka."
