Betty Balfour

**Betty Balfour** (27 March 1903 – 4 November 1977) was a celebrated English actress renowned for her contributions to the silent film era, often hailed as the "British Mary Pickford" and "Britain's Queen of Happiness." Balfour rose to prominence in the 1920s, becoming the most beloved actress in Britain. Her most notable works include the *Squibs* film series, which showcased her comedic talent and endeared her to the public. In 1927, she was recognized as the nation's favorite world star by the *Daily Mirror*.

Her career began on stage in 1913, and she made a significant impact with her performance in *Medora* at the Alhambra Theatre, leading to her signing with T. A. Welsh and George Pearson for *Nothing Else Matters* in 1920. Balfour's versatility shone through in films like *Love, Life and Laughter* (1923) and *Reveille* (1924), where she displayed a more serious side, further demonstrated by her role in *Somebody's Darling* (1925) as a wealthy heiress.

She ventured beyond British cinema, starring in German films such as *Die sieben Töchter der Frau Gyurkovics* and *Die Regimentstochter*, and collaborated with notable directors including Marcel L'Herbier and Alfred Hitchcock, appearing in *Champagne* (1928). Though her sound film debut in *The Nipper* (1930) did not achieve the desired success, Balfour remained active, taking on roles in *Evergreen* (1934) and *Forever England* (1935). Despite her professional achievements, Balfour faced challenges in her personal life, including a tumultuous marriage to composer Jimmy Campbell that ended in 1941. She passed away at the age of 74 in Weybridge, Surrey.
