Mstyslav Chernov
Mstyslav Andriyovych Chernov, born in 1985 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, is a distinguished videographer, photographer, photojournalist, filmmaker, war correspondent, and novelist. Chernov is particularly recognized for his compelling documentation of significant historical events, including the Revolution of Dignity, the War in Donbas, the tragic downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the Syrian civil war, and the Battle of Mosul in Iraq. His recent work highlights the harrowing Siege of Mariupol during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Chernov's exceptional reporting from Mariupol earned him numerous prestigious accolades. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2023, sharing this honor with fellow journalists Evgeniy Maloletka, Vasilisa Stepanenko, and Lori Hinnant. His impactful visual storytelling also garnered the Deutsche Welle Freedom of Speech Award, Knight International Journalism Awards, and the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award, among others. The footage he captured in Mariupol served as a foundation for the documentary "20 Days in Mariupol," which premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, earning the Audience Award in the World Cinema Documentary category.
