Jennifer Beals
Jennifer Beals, born on December 19, 1963, is a talented American actress and former teen model, best known for her iconic portrayal of Alexandra "Alex" Owens in the 1983 film Flashdance and as Bette Porter in the Showtime series The L Word. Her performance in Flashdance earned her a nomination for a Golden Globe Award and an NAACP Image Award. Over her career, Beals has featured in more than 50 films.
Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Beals is the daughter of Jeanne, an elementary school teacher, and Alfred Beals, a grocery store owner. With an African American father and an Irish American mother, she has often reflected on her multiracial background, describing it as feeling like an outsider. After her father's passing when she was nine, her mother remarried in 1981. Beals discovered her passion for acting while participating in a high school play and attending a performance at the Steppenwolf Theatre. She later graduated from Yale University with a degree in American literature in 1987, taking a break from her studies to film Flashdance.
