Soumitra Chatterjee, also known as Soumitra Chattopadhyay, was a renowned Indian Bengali actor and poet, born on January 19, 1935, and passing away on November 15, 2020. He gained prominence through his remarkable partnership with the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray, collaborating on fourteen films, including significant works such as *Apur Sansar* (1959), *Charulata* (1964), and *Ghare Baire* (1984). His performances often drew comparisons with contemporary actor Uttam Kumar, who was a dominant figure in Bengali cinema during the 1960s and 1970s.

Chatterjee was the first Indian cinematic figure to receive the prestigious Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, bestowed by France, highlighting his artistic contributions. He was also honored with the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2012, recognizing his lifetime achievements in Indian cinema, and received the Padma Bhushan in 2004 from the Government of India.

With a prolific career spanning over 210 films until 2016, he collaborated with other eminent directors, such as Mrinal Sen and Tapan Sinha. His accolades include two National Film Awards and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1998 for his theatrical contributions.
