Stone began her journey in the entertainment industry with modeling, featuring in various television commercials and print ads. She made her film debut as an extra in Woody Allen's 1980 comedy-drama, Stardust Memories. Her first significant role came in Wes Craven's horror flick, Deadly Blessing (1981). Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in several films, including Irreconcilable Differences (1984), King Solomon's Mines (1985), and Above the Law (1988). However, her breakthrough came with her role in Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall (1990).

Stone achieved global fame as Catherine Tramell in Verhoeven’s 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.
