Katina Paxinou

Katina Paxinou (Κατίνα Παξινού; December 17, 1900 – February 22, 1973) was a distinguished Greek actress renowned for her contributions to both film and theater. Her acting journey began in Greece in 1928, and she played a pivotal role as one of the founding members of the National Theatre of Greece in 1932.

When World War II erupted, Paxinou was in the United Kingdom, but she later relocated to the United States. It was there that she made her cinematic debut in the acclaimed film *For Whom the Bell Tolls* (1943), which garnered her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. Following this success, she appeared in several Hollywood productions before returning to her homeland in the early 1950s. Paxinou became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1951.

Upon her return to Greece, she redirected her focus back to the stage and also starred in a variety of European films, including the celebrated *Rocco and His Brothers* (1960). Katina Paxinou's legacy as an actress remains significant, reflecting her versatility and talent across different artistic mediums.
