Illona's passion for acting surfaced early; she graced the stage of Odense Teater at just 11 years old and made her official debut there in 1926.

From 1926 to 1932, she showcased her talents with various touring theater companies before joining the prestigious Royal Danish Theatre, where she remained a prominent figure until 1953. One of her standout performances during this period was as Esther in the acclaimed play "Indenfor murene," which solidified her reputation as a talented actress.

Although Illona's film appearances were limited, she made notable contributions to Danish cinema with her roles in three films: "De bør forelske Dem" (1935), "Afsporet" (1942), and "Så mødes vi hos Tove" (1946).
