Ted Ross
Ted Ross (June 30, 1934 – September 3, 2002) was a prominent American actor celebrated for his unforgettable portrayal of the Cowardly Lion in the groundbreaking musical The Wiz. This all-African American adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic story premiered on Broadway in 1975, earning Ross a Tony Award for his remarkable performance. He reprised this iconic role in the 1978 film adaptation, which featured stars such as Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, solidifying his place in theatrical history.
Beyond The Wiz, Ross showcased his versatility in various films, including memorable roles in Arthur and the comedy franchise Police Academy. His television career was equally impressive, with guest appearances on popular sitcoms such as The Jeffersons, Benson, The Cosby Show, and its spin-off A Different World. Ross's final appearance came in the 1991 film The Fisher King, where he continued to demonstrate his talent and charisma.
Born Theodore Ross Roberts in Zanesville, Ohio, he relocated to Dayton with his family at the age of seven. Tragically, Ross passed away in 2002 due to complications from a stroke he suffered in 1998. After his death, he was cremated, and his ashes were scattered, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of performers.
