Margit Carstensen
Margit Carstensen (February 29, 1940 – June 1, 2023) was a prominent German actress celebrated for her impactful performances in theatre and film, particularly in the works of renowned director Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Born in Kiel, Germany, Carstensen completed her high school education in 1958 before pursuing acting studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. This training led her to her initial theatre roles in cities such as Kleve, Heilbronn, Münster, and Braunschweig. In 1965, she joined the German Playhouse in Hamburg for a four-year engagement.
Her breakthrough came in 1969 at the Theater am Goetheplatz in Bremen, where she first collaborated with Fassbinder. Her portrayal of a character in Fassbinder's televised production of The Coffee Shop garnered her national fame. Carstensen continued to shine in roles like Geesche Gottfried in Bremen Freedom (1972) and Nora Helmer in a televised adaptation of A Doll's House (1974). She became widely recognized for her performances in Fassbinder's films, including The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972), Martha (1974), and Chinese Roulette (1976).
Carstensen's career also included international film projects, such as Possession (1981) and Angry Harvest (1985), which earned an Academy Award nomination. Her talent was acknowledged with numerous accolades, including the 1973 German Film Award and the 2019 Götz-George-Preis for her lifetime achievements. Even in her later years, she remained active, appearing in the long-running series Tatort.
