29 titles Acting May 17, 1911 Died: Jun 23, 1998 Boyle, County Roscommon, Ireland

Maureen Paula O'Sullivan was born on May 17, 1911, in County Roscommon, Ireland. Growing up, she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Roehampton, London, where she became friends with future star Vivien Leigh. From an early age, Maureen aspired to be an actress, dedicating herself to her studies and immersing herself in literature. Her big break came in 1930 when she met director Frank Borzage while he was in Dublin filming “Song o’ My Heart.” After impressing him with her screen test, she won the role of Eileen O’Brien, which led her to Hollywood.

Once in California, Maureen quickly secured parts in several films, including “Just Imagine,” “Princess and the Plumber,” and “So This Is London,” all released in 1930. Her career skyrocketed when she was cast opposite Olympic champion Johnny Weissmuller in the iconic role of Jane in “Tarzan the Ape Man” (1932). This partnership yielded five more Tarzan films, culminating in “Tarzan’s New York Adventure” (1942), solidifying her place in film history.

Beyond the Tarzan series, Maureen showcased her talent in classics like “The Flame Within” (1935), “David Copperfield” (1935), and “Pride and Prejudice” (1940). Although she chose to scale back her career in the 1940s to focus on her family—she married writer John Farrow and raised seven children—she continued to act on occasion. Later audiences recognized her as Elizabeth Alvorg in “Peggy Sue Got Married” (1986), with her last film appearance in “The River Pirates” (1988). O'Sullivan passed away on June 23, 1998, in Scottsdale, Arizona, at the age of 87, leaving behind a rich legacy in cinema.
