Annie Ross
Annie Ross, born Annabelle McCauley Allan Short on July 25, 1930, in Surrey, England, was a celebrated British-American singer and actress renowned for her contributions to jazz as a member of the iconic vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. The daughter of Scottish vaudeville performers John "Jack" Short and Mary Dalziel Short, she was introduced to the stage at just three years old. At four, her family emigrated to New York City, where she won a contract with MGM through a children's radio competition.
After relocating to Los Angeles with her aunt, famed singer and actress Ella Logan, Ross's early career included performances in "Our Gang Follies of 1938" and a role as Judy Garland's sister in "Presenting Lily Mars" (1943). Throughout her career, she showcased her versatility in film, appearing in notable works such as "Straight On till Morning" (1972), "Superman III" (1983), and the cult classic "Throw Momma from the Train" (1987). Ross also lent her voice to characters in "The Wicker Man" (1973) and "Salon Kitty" (1976).
Her stage work was equally impressive, with performances in productions like "The Threepenny Opera" (1972) and "The Pirates of Penzance" (1982). Annie Ross passed away in New York City on July 21, 2020, just days before her 90th birthday, leaving behind a rich legacy in music and film.
