Yoko Tani
Yoko Tani (谷洋子, Tani Yōko; August 2, 1928 – April 19, 1999) was a Japanese actress and nightclub performer who gained prominence in France. Born Itani Yōko in Paris to Japanese parents associated with the Japanese embassy, she was conceived during their maritime journey from Japan to Europe in 1927 and brought into the world in the French capital a year later. Her name, Yōko, translates to "ocean-child," reflecting her unique beginnings.
Tani’s family returned to Japan when she was just two years old, and she completed her education at Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School and Tsuda University. In 1950, she returned to France, where she pursued a Catholic scholarship in aesthetics at the Sorbonne but soon gravitated towards the vibrant world of cabaret and variety shows. Tani became known for her captivating performances, particularly her exotic "geisha" dances that often concluded with a dramatic kimono reveal.
Her talent caught the eye of renowned filmmaker Marcel Carné, leading to her involvement in the film industry. Tani made her cinematic debut as a Japanese dancer in the 1955 film *Le port du désir* and further showcased her abilities in the stage adaptation of *The Teahouse of the August Moon* at Théâtre Montparnasse. Her marriage to fellow artist Roland Lesaffre marked another significant chapter in her life as she continued to leave a lasting impact on French entertainment until her passing in 1999.
