Freni gained significant acclaim early in her career at the Glyndebourne Festival, where she showcased her talents as Zerlina in Mozart's *Don Giovanni* and Adina in Donizetti's *L'elisir d'amore*.
Among her most celebrated roles, Freni became synonymous with Mimì in Puccini's *La bohème*, a character she portrayed from 1957 until 1999, including memorable performances at La Scala in Milan and the Vienna State Opera in 1963, under the baton of Herbert von Karajan.
