Ronald Fraser

Ronald Gordon Fraser (April 11, 1930 – March 13, 1997) was a prominent British character actor known for his extensive work in theater, film, and television from the 1950s through the 1990s. He became a recognizable figure in West End clubs during the 1960s, developing a reputation for his heavy drinking.

Fraser's film and television credits span a diverse range of notable works, including The Long and the Short and the Tall (1961), The Best of Enemies (1961), Flight of the Phoenix (1965), The Avengers (1965), and The Killing of Sister George (1968). He also featured in The Misfit (1970–1971), Pygmalion (1973), Swallows and Amazons (1974), and Come Play With Me (1977), among others. His later appearances included roles in Minder (1985–1989), Taggart (1992), and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1993).

Born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, Fraser was the son of a Scottish interior decorator and builder. He received his education at Ashton-under-Lyne Grammar School before furthering his studies in Scotland and serving as a lieutenant in the Seaforth Highlanders during national service. While stationed in Benghazi, North Africa, he performed in Terence Rattigan's comic play French Without Tears.

Fraser trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 1953. He began his career at Glasgow’s Citizens' Theatre and joined the Old Vic repertory company in 1954, making his London debut in The Good Sailor, adapted from Herman Melville’s Billy Budd. His West End credits included The Long and the Short and the Tall, The Ginger Man, and a notable portrayal of Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor.
