Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Kansas City, Lambert served as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Following the war, he utilized the G.I. Bill to pursue his passion for acting, studying at the Actors Lab in Los Angeles and attending various acting schools in New York.

Lambert made his film debut in the epic classic Spartacus in 1960, marking the beginning of a diverse acting career. He initially honed his craft on the New York stage during the 1950s, where he earned recognition for his performance in the Broadway production of "A Little Night Music." Beyond acting, Lambert was also a talented playwright and stage director. He wrote, directed, and starred in his own play, "Interior Hollywood Day."

Throughout his career, Lambert was a familiar face on television, notably appearing in a remarkable 14 episodes of the acclaimed anthology series Playhouse 90, which aired from 1956. His multifaceted contributions to the arts left an enduring legacy in American theater and film.
